“I know all the roads in Dhaka. Just tell me the name and I can take you there. I have been a rickshaw puller here for the last 25 years.
I am from Shariatpur. My father died when I was very young. Since then, me and my siblings did whatever we could to earn money and gave it to our mother. I came to Dhaka when I was very young. People took care of me. Without their help, I couldn’t have survived. I used to work in a shop in Azimpur. I used to deliver commodities to the customers’ homes. Almost everyone knew me because of this. But this was 25 years ago. I don’t know if they will recognize me anymore.
Then I became a rickshaw puller. I got married after that and I have three daughters now. I adore them a lot. My oldest daughter is married and the younger ones are studying at a Madrasa.
Everything was going well for me before I got sick. For the last couple of years, I couldn’t work. My family is struggling a lot. We are barely surviving in one way or another.
Doctors prescribed a test which I can’t afford in any way. My wife tried a lot to manage the money. But she didn’t succeed. I think I’m going to leave the hospital and go back home. I can’t live away from my kids.”
